In practice, the difference shows up in the content. A page written for SEO targets a keyword. A page written for GEO opens with a direct answer and spells out the facts AI likes to quote: prices or price ranges, timelines, what is included and how you compare to alternatives.
The most important point: one does not replace the other. AI assistants find their sources in search indexes. Google AI Overviews are built on the Google index, and Copilot relies on Bing.
