AI Visibility: How to Track What AI Says About Your Brand

Lyudmila Pike from Kırşehir, Co-founder / CMO

Picture this: a potential customer is shortlisting vendors and asks an AI assistant, "What do you know about Company N? Is it worth working with?" The answer comes back fluent and confident. It may also quote a price from three years ago, list an office you moved out of long ago, retell someone else's review or mix you up with a company that has a similar name. The customer does not call to double-check. They close the chat and move on to the next name.

Most business owners have never checked what AI says about their company. They have tracked search rankings for years and read their reviews every week, yet their AI visibility remains a blind spot. Below we break down how to measure brand visibility in AI search, how to assess sentiment and catch factual errors, how manual checks compare with an AI visibility tracker, and what to do when AI gets your business wrong.

Key takeaway

One question to ChatGPT proves nothing. Measure AI visibility with the same prompts every time: share of voice, sentiment and fact checks, and fix errors at their sources.

First things first: what an AI answer is and where customers see it

An AI answer is ready-made text an AI assistant writes in response to someone's question. It is not a list of links like a classic search results page but a coherent story: "here are three companies — the first has these prices, the second has strong reviews, the third has been around the longest." Links to the websites the assistant took its information from usually appear below or inside the text. These are called sources, or citations.

People see AI answers in several places:

  • Above the search results. In Google, that is an AI Overview, or a full conversation in AI Mode. Someone types a query, and a ready-made answer appears above the familiar list of websites.
  • In AI chat assistants. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, DeepSeek — people type a question the way they would in a messaging app and get an answer.
  • In voice assistants and apps. Here the answer often comes with no links at all: the customer only hears company names.

For this topic, one thing matters most: customers treat an AI answer as a neutral reference, not as advertising. What AI says about your company sounds more convincing to them than the copy on your own website.

What poor AI visibility costs your business

The problem is bigger than "we're not in ChatGPT." You lose customers in several ways at once:

  • You are not named. Asked to "recommend a company," AI lists three to five names. If yours is not one of them, the customer chooses from the ones that are. We explain why this happens in why AI recommends your competitors.
  • You are named, but in a bad light. AI retells an old dispute with a customer, a complaint taken out of context or a comparison where you come out behind. Trust in your brand erodes before the first conversation.
  • You are named with errors. The wrong price, a closed location, a service you stopped offering long ago. The customer shows up with false expectations — or does not show up at all.
  • AI cites someone else's website. The assistant talks about you, but the source it links to is a directory or a competitor's comparison page. The click and the trust go to a third party.

The tricky part is that none of this shows up in your usual metrics. Rankings hold, ads keep running, and yet some customers have already made up their minds after reading a couple of paragraphs from AI.

How to measure AI visibility

A single question to ChatGPT proves nothing. AI answers change with the wording, location, language, chat history and simply the moment you ask. To make brand visibility in AI search measurable, you need a system with four parts: tracked prompts, AI share of voice, sentiment and fact-checking.

Tracked prompts from your prompt research

In SEO, rankings are checked against a keyword list. In AI search optimization, the equivalent comes from prompt research — collecting the questions customers actually ask AI assistants. We explain the method in what prompt research is and how to do it. From that list, you pick a set of tracked prompts and ask the same questions every time, so results can be compared over time.

A good set covers four types of prompts:

  • Choice: "recommend a reliable company for…", "which service is best for…" — shows whether you are named among the options.
  • Comparison: "Company N vs. Company M", "which one should I choose" — shows how AI describes your strengths and weaknesses.
  • Direct brand questions: "Company N reviews", "is Company N legit", "how much does Company N charge" — reveals sentiment and errors.
  • Local questions: "where to get… in Kırşehir", "best companies near me" — checks whether AI connects your business with the right location.

AI share of voice

The core metric is the share of tracked answers that name your company. Calculate it for each AI assistant separately and overall, and list the competitors AI mentions more often than you. Separately, record whether your website appears among the cited sources.

Here is a hypothetical example of such a snapshot — the numbers are made up for illustration:

Metric What we record Hypothetical example
Tracked prompts How many prompts from your research were asked 40 prompts across 5 AI assistants — 200 answers
AI share of voice How many answers name the company Named in 30 of 200 answers
Website citations How many answers cite your website as a source Website cited in 12 answers
Sentiment How the company is described when mentioned 22 neutral, 6 positive, 2 negative
Factual errors Wrong prices, addresses, services Outdated price in 5 answers
Competitors Who AI names instead of you Company M named in 70 answers

A single snapshot like this says little on its own. The value appears when you repeat it with the same prompts and see movement: did your share of voice grow, did the errors disappear, is your website cited more often?

Sentiment

Not all mentions are equal. "Company N is one of the most established players in the industry, and customers praise its turnaround times" and "some customers complain about delays at Company N" are both technically mentions, but they pull in opposite directions. Label every mention as positive, neutral or negative, and note what the negative ones rely on: a real review, an old news story or someone else's comparison.

Negative sentiment rooted in a real problem is not fixed with content. It is fixed by working with customers and responding honestly to reviews. Negative sentiment rooted in outdated or borrowed information is fixed through sources — more on that below.

Errors and distorted facts

AI does not lie on purpose. It builds an answer from what it finds, and if sources contradict each other or are out of date, errors end up in the answer. Typical distortions include:

  • outdated prices, plans and terms still sitting on old pages or in directories;
  • an old address, phone number or business hours from an abandoned map listing;
  • services the company stopped offering long ago — and no mention of new ones;
  • confusion with namesakes: companies with a similar name in another city or industry;
  • someone else's reviews, news or legal disputes attributed to you;
  • incorrect details about the company's leadership and experts.

Manual checks or an AI visibility tracker

You can check AI answers by hand, or use specialized tools that automatically send prompts to AI assistants and collect statistics. Each approach has its strengths.

Criteria Manual checks AI visibility tracker
Volume Dozens of prompts per snapshot Hundreds or thousands of prompts
Attention to detail A person catches nuances of tone and factual errors Good at counting mentions, weaker at understanding context
What the customer sees Close to a real user: same interface, location and language Often uses programmatic access, so answers may differ from what a person sees
AI assistant coverage Any assistant, including AI answers above search results Depends on the tool; not every platform is supported
Acting on the results It is immediately clear which source needs fixing A specialist has to interpret the numbers and build a plan

In practice, the combination works best. A tracker shows the big picture and trends across a large set of prompts, while a specialist manually checks the key brand questions, reads answers in full, looks for distortions and traces them to their sources. A tool without a person gives you a nice chart but does not tell you what to fix. A person without a system forgets, a month later, which prompts they asked last time.

If you check on your own, follow three rules: ask every prompt in a new chat with no history, keep your location and language fixed, and save each answer with its source links and the date. Otherwise, you will have nothing to compare your next snapshot with.

How to fix what AI gets wrong

Telling an AI assistant "you're wrong" is pointless: in the next conversation with another user, it will repeat the same thing. You need to fix not the answer but the sources it is built from. Here is the order of work.

1. Find the source of the error

Look at which pages the AI assistant cites and track down where the wrong fact lives online. Often it is an old page on your own website, a forgotten directory listing, an archived news story or an aggregator that copied your details years ago.

2. Clean up your website

Your website should be the main and most accurate source of facts about your company: current prices, services, locations, company details, leadership and experts. Outdated pages get updated or properly removed. Company facts get marked up so machines understand them unambiguously — we cover how in schema markup, FAQs and your company as an entity. At the same time, check that AI crawlers can access your site: if they are blocked, AI will only learn about you from what others say.

3. Align third-party sources

Your Google Business Profile, industry directories, review platforms and social media profiles should all say the same thing about your company. Where you can, fix the details yourself; where you cannot, contact the site owners. For a detailed guide to building a consistent presence beyond your website, read brand mentions, reviews and digital PR for AI visibility.

4. Give AI the right answer

If there is no clear answer anywhere to "how much does it cost" or "what makes you different," AI fills the gap with fragments. So create content for the questions from your prompt research: pages with direct answers, explainers, comparisons and expert articles. Articles published in external sources then confirm those facts from the outside.

5. Check that the fix worked

AI assistants do not update instantly: changes are picked up as crawlers revisit pages. After making fixes, repeat your tracked prompts and compare the results with the previous snapshot. If the error persists, look for the next source.

The result: you know what AI says about your brand — and you can influence it

Once AI visibility tracking runs on a regular schedule, your brand's presence in AI answers stops being guesswork. You see which prompts get your company named, which do not and who AI recommends instead. Factual errors are found and fixed before dozens of customers run into them. Negative sentiment is separated into real problems and outdated retellings. And every change on your website and beyond can be verified with the next snapshot.

No one can guarantee a spot in an AI answer: AI answers change. But the way AI assistants choose sources and form an opinion about a company is already predictable enough. GEO is built on top of good old SEO, and consistent work along those lines pays off the same way it does in search optimization.
