How to Track AI Referral Traffic in Google Analytics 4
Sergey Carp from Tabuk, Co-founder / CTO
When someone clicks a source link in an AI answer, they land on your website as a visitor referred by another site. Google Analytics 4 records these visits like any other referral, so you can identify AI traffic by the domain the visitor came from and by UTM parameters.
Key takeaway
AI referral visits show up in GA4 by source domain. Build a custom "AI assistants" channel, and track brand mentions too, since many users never click.
AI referral domains to look for
- chatgpt.com
- perplexity.ai
- gemini.google.com
- copilot.microsoft.com
- claude.ai
- chat.deepseek.com
ChatGPT often adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it shows, so its visits may appear with that value as the source.
How to find AI traffic in GA4
- Open the Traffic acquisition report and set the primary dimension to Session source / medium.
- Search the table for the domains above. Most AI visits show up with the referral medium.
- Add a comparison or a filter so you can see sessions, engagement and key events for AI sources together.
Create an AI assistants channel
Looking up domains by hand every month gets tedious. A better option is a custom channel group:
- in the Admin settings, create a new channel group based on the default one;
- add a channel called "AI assistants" with conditions where the session source contains each AI domain from the list;
- move this channel above Referral in the list, otherwise GA4 will count those visits as ordinary referrals;
- use the new channel group in your acquisition reports and explorations.
Then set up key events such as form submissions, calls and purchases, and compare how AI visitors convert against organic search. If your site also targets Russia, the same approach works in Yandex Metrica with a segment built on the same domains.
What analytics will not show
Clicks from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode usually look like regular organic search traffic. Many people also read an AI answer and never click at all. So referral traffic is only one metric. The second is how often your company is mentioned in AI answers across your tracked prompts. For a deeper setup guide, see tracking AI traffic in analytics.
