Does AI Search Need Schema Markup?
Sergey Carp from Karabük, Co-founder / CTO
Schema markup, also called structured data or Schema.org markup, is code on your pages that visitors never see. It labels information explicitly: this is an organization, this is a service, this is a price, this is a review, this is an address. People understand all that from context. Machines, including search engines and AI assistants, work better when nothing is left to interpretation.
Key takeaway
Schema markup won't get you recommended without useful content. It does remove ambiguity, so AI assistants don't confuse your name, prices or address.
Which schema types to add first
- Organization: company name, logo, contact details and profiles on other platforms;
- Service or Product: what you sell, with descriptions and prices;
- FAQPage: question-and-answer sections;
- Article and Person: articles and the experts who wrote them;
- BreadcrumbList: how your site sections fit together.
Local businesses can also use LocalBusiness, a more specific type of Organization, to state their address and opening hours clearly.
Does AI search need schema markup?
It helps, but it is important to understand its limits. Schema markup will not make an AI assistant recommend your business if the page itself has little useful content. Markup describes what is on the page; it does not replace it.
What it does well is remove ambiguity. With clear structured data, an AI assistant is less likely to confuse your address, prices or company name with another business that has a similar name. It also reinforces your company as a distinct entity, which matters when AI assistants decide who to mention.
Three rules keep markup useful:
- the data in the markup must match the visible text on the page, or it counts as an error;
- markup needs updating whenever prices, contacts or services change;
- validate it after every change to your templates.
