Which AI Search Engines Matter? Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and More
Lyudmila Pike from New York City, Co-founder / CMO
A marketing team decides it is time to optimize for AI search and starts a list: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Qwen — and, for anyone selling into Russia, Yandex Alice AI and GigaChat. New features ship every week, and a fair question comes up: does every AI search engine need its own project, agency and budget? Usually it ends one of two ways. The topic gets pushed to "next quarter", or the effort gets spread across everything at once and nothing gets finished.
Both options are expensive. The good news: all AI assistants share a common foundation, so you do not need ten separate projects. What differs is the audience, the search index behind each assistant and the language — and that changes the order of work. Below is a map of AI search engines for businesses selling in the US, Europe and worldwide: who uses each one, where it gets its data and how to set priorities for your market.
Key takeaway
All AI search engines share one SEO foundation. Build it once, then set priorities by market: Google and ChatGPT first, Alice AI for Russia, DeepSeek and Qwen for Asia.
What an AI answer is and where people see it
An AI answer is a ready-made response an AI assistant writes instead of a list of links. It can include company names, prices, comparisons, advice and links to its sources. People see AI answers in two formats.
- Inside search. Someone searches as usual, and an AI answer already sits on top of the results: an AI Overview in Google, a Copilot answer in Bing, an Alice AI answer in Yandex. Google also offers AI Mode for longer, conversational questions.
- In AI chat assistants. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Qwen. A person types "recommend a vendor" or "which one should I choose" and gets a recommendation, often with source links.
Either way, the AI names a few companies and the user chooses among them. The website cited as a source earns trust and clicks. A company missing from the answer does not exist for that buyer — and being absent from one popular assistant means losing its entire audience, no matter how much you have invested in your website and ads.
Why you do not need ten separate projects
Every AI search engine does the same job: find relevant pages, understand them, cross-check facts and summarize them. So the requirements for a good source are similar everywhere:
- the website is well indexed by search engines and open to AI crawlers;
- pages answer customer questions directly and contain verifiable facts;
- company details match across the website, map listings, directories and social profiles;
- the company and its experts are mentioned on third-party websites.
This is generative engine optimization (GEO), and it is built on top of good old SEO. One solid foundation works for every assistant at once. The differences sit on top: some assistants rely on Google, some on Bing, some on their own crawlers, and Alice AI on Yandex. Hence the right setup: one foundation, priorities by market, and AI visibility tracking across every assistant your customers use.
The map: who uses each AI search engine and where it gets its data
The assistants are listed roughly in order of importance for a business selling in English-speaking and global markets. Buzz and reach are not the same thing: Google's AI Overviews appear in regular search results, so people see them without ever opening an AI app — which is why Google comes first.
Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini
AI Overviews are the AI answer block on top of Google results, with links to source pages; AI Mode is Google's conversational search for complex questions. Both are built on the Google index, so the foundation is classic Google SEO: indexing, page quality and site authority. Gemini is Google's AI assistant — an app plus a helper in Android, Chrome and Google Workspace. The Google-Extended token in robots.txt controls whether your content is used for Gemini training and grounding; it does not affect Google Search. Google rolls out AI features by country and language gradually, but in most international markets AI Overviews are among the most visible AI answers. Read our guide on how to rank in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.
ChatGPT
The best-known AI assistant, built by OpenAI. It answers from what the model learned in training and through web search, which adds source links. OpenAI runs three crawlers: GPTBot for training, OAI-SearchBot for search and ChatGPT-User for pages a user asks it to open. For almost any business, ChatGPT is a must. See how to rank in ChatGPT.
Perplexity
An AI answer engine: nearly every answer is assembled from pages found in real time, with numbered source links, so you can see exactly whom it cites. Its crawlers are PerplexityBot (search indexing) and Perplexity-User (user-requested fetches). The audience leans toward researchers, analysts and tech-savvy users. See our Perplexity optimization guide.
Claude
Anthropic's AI assistant, strong among developers, knowledge workers and B2B teams who use it for research and vendor comparisons. Its crawlers are ClaudeBot (training), Claude-SearchBot (search) and Claude-User (user-requested fetches). For software, professional services and international B2B, Claude belongs on the priority list. See our Claude optimization guide.
Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft's assistant in Windows, Edge, Bing and Microsoft 365. It relies on the Bing index, so the foundation is Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow. For B2B and enterprise buyers it matters: the assistant already lives in their email and documents. Many businesses ignore Bing entirely — a direct gap in Copilot visibility. See our Microsoft Copilot optimization guide.
Grok
xAI's assistant, available on its website, in apps and inside X. Grok draws on web search and on posts on X, so it readily summarizes fresh discussions — which makes the visibility of your company and experts on X matter. xAI describes its crawlers and sources in general terms. See our Grok optimization guide.
DeepSeek
An AI assistant from the Chinese company DeepSeek, popular worldwide thanks to its free chat and open models. Its search mode grounds answers in pages it finds, but crawlers and sources are documented less thoroughly than at OpenAI or Anthropic, so optimization relies on the universal foundation. It matters most for Asian markets and developer audiences. See our DeepSeek optimization guide.
Qwen
A family of AI models from Alibaba, used in a chat and apps and built into third-party and enterprise products. The chat can search the web; Alibaba describes its sources in general terms. The same foundation applies, plus content and mentions in your target markets' languages. For companies entering China and wider Asia, Qwen is worth tracking. See our Qwen optimization guide.
Yandex Alice AI
Yandex's AI assistant, shown on top of Yandex results, in the Yandex app and on Alice devices. It relies on Yandex Search, so the foundation is Yandex Webmaster, a Yandex Maps listing and Russian-language third-party sources. For a company entering Russia, it has the widest reach. See our guide to Alice AI and Yandex search with Alice.
GigaChat
Sber's AI assistant, available on the web, in apps and inside corporate systems through an API. For companies entering Russia — especially those selling to mid-size and large businesses — it is a noticeable channel. Sber describes its sources in general terms, so the universal foundation and a strong Russian-language presence do the work. See our GigaChat optimization guide.

How to set priorities for your market and industry
A priority does not mean ignoring the rest: the foundation works for every assistant, and tracking covers all of them. Priorities decide where specialist hours go first — which technical tools to set up, which language to write in and which sites to target for brand mentions.
If you sell in the US, UK, Europe and other Western markets
Start with Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT. Add Gemini for consumer audiences, Copilot and Claude for B2B and enterprise buyers, Perplexity for tech and expert niches, and Grok if your brand or experts are active on X. Content in your markets' languages and mentions on local industry sites do the heavy lifting.
If you are entering Russia
Add Yandex Alice AI first: Yandex indexing, a Yandex Maps listing, Russian-language directories and review sites. Then GigaChat if your customers are businesses. A full Russian-language website is essential — machine-translated pages will not compete with local players.
If you are entering China and wider Asia
For audiences in China, DeepSeek and Qwen move up; in Asian markets where Google is widely used, AI Overviews and ChatGPT stay on top. Keep your company name, addresses and contacts identical for every country, or AI assistants will mix up your branches.
Priorities by industry
- Local businesses — clinics, salons, home services, real estate in New York City: Google AI Overviews and your Google Business Profile, then ChatGPT and Gemini. More on how clinics, real estate and local businesses show up in AI search.
- Online stores: Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity. Product pages with full specs and clear shipping and returns answers matter most. More on getting an online store into AI answers.
- Services and B2B: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Copilot, Claude. More on AI search optimization for service and B2B websites.
- SaaS and IT: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, DeepSeek, Qwen. Documentation and honest comparisons beat marketing copy here.
- Export and international B2B: Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, Perplexity — plus Alice AI and GigaChat for Russia, DeepSeek and Qwen for Asia.
How to tell your strategy is working
GEO results are measured by presence in AI answers, not rankings. It starts with prompt research: collecting the questions customers ask AI assistants, the way keyword research works for SEO. Those tracked prompts are run regularly across every priority assistant, recording:
- whether your company is named, and alongside which competitors;
- which websites are cited as sources — yours or someone else's;
- whether the facts are right: prices, locations, services;
- how many visits from AI assistants show up in Google Analytics 4, and how many become leads.
A one-off check proves nothing: answers change with wording, location and even the day. Compare measurements over the same set of prompts. For the mechanics, start with what an AI answer looks like and how AI assistants decide whom to recommend.
Bottom line: be in every AI search engine your customers use — and be smart about it
You need to be present in every AI assistant your customers use, but not through ten separate projects. One strong foundation — indexing, open crawler access, clear pages, consistent company data, brand mentions — works for all of them. On top come market priorities: Google for most international markets, Bing for Copilot, Yandex for Russia, DeepSeek and Qwen for China, language versions for every country you sell in. You pay for one consistent body of work instead of ten strategies, and AI visibility tracking shows where it already works and where more effort is needed.
