What Is llms.txt and Does My Website Need It?

Sergey Carp from New York City, Co-founder / CTO

llms.txt is a plain text file placed at the root of your website, at an address like example.com/llms.txt. It gives large language models a short summary of who you are and a list of links to your most important pages. The idea is simple: instead of making an AI assistant dig through menus, banners, pop-ups and scripts, you hand it one clean document with everything that matters.

Key takeaway

llms.txt is a Markdown file that summarizes your business for AI. AI providers haven't confirmed they use it, but it's cheap to add and harmless.

How llms.txt differs from robots.txt and sitemap.xml

Your site probably already has two files for machines. llms.txt does a different job:

  • robots.txt tells crawlers where they may and may not go;
  • sitemap.xml lists all the pages you want indexed;
  • llms.txt explains meaning: what your business does, what matters most and where to read about it.

A typical llms.txt file is written in Markdown. It opens with your company name, follows with a one- or two-sentence description, and then groups links into sections such as services, pricing, about and contact, each with a short note on what the page covers.

Does your website need an llms.txt file?

To be straightforward about it: the format was proposed in 2024, and major AI providers have not officially confirmed that they use it. It is not an official standard, and nobody can guarantee that ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity will read your file. It will not, on its own, get your business into AI answers.

So why bother? Because the cost is low and there is no downside:

  • a good llms.txt takes about an hour to write;
  • it does not interfere with search engines or your existing SEO;
  • writing it forces you to pin down the key facts about your business in clear, consistent language, which pays off for generative engine optimization (GEO) either way.

Think of llms.txt as a small, cheap addition to your technical setup, not a shortcut. AI visibility still depends on crawler access, clear pages, accurate facts and mentions of your company across the web. If you are ready to write one, here is how to create an llms.txt file step by step.

At AI Search Optimization, we create and maintain llms.txt as part of our technical fixes, for $290 per month including the first 10 hours of work. Book a call to get started.
