What Do the Sources Under an AI Answer Mean?

Lyudmila Pike from New York City, Co-founder / CMO

The links under or inside an AI answer show which web pages the AI used to write it. The user asked a question, and instead of a list of websites got a ready-made summary. The small links, cards or numbered citations next to it are the sources: the pages the AI read and retold in its own words.

Key takeaway

The links under an AI answer are the pages the AI summarized. Whoever is cited gets the user's trust and the click.

What it looks like for the user:

  • at the top, a short, coherent answer to the question;
  • next to it or inside the text, links to one or several source websites;
  • below, the familiar list of search results, which many people no longer scroll to.

Each platform displays sources in its own way. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode show links and page cards next to the text. ChatGPT adds small inline links with the site name and an expandable source list. Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot use numbered citations. Yandex, for example, labels its answers as created by AI based on a source, with a note that they may contain inaccuracies. The principle is the same everywhere: the answer is assembled from other people's pages, and the source gets the trust and the clicks.

Why do people click at all? Nearly every AI answer carries a reminder that AI can make mistakes. When the question is about money, a contract or choosing a vendor, users open the source to check prices and terms for themselves. That click goes to whoever the AI cited.

If a competitor's website is the source, the user reads that competitor's wording, prices and brand name. If it is yours, the AI is effectively recommending you in the most visible spot on the page. If an answer is built purely from the model's training data, there may be no links at all, which is another reason to be well represented on the web.

We compare how each platform shows citations in more detail in how AI answers cite sources.
