How Does AI Choose Which Sources to Cite?
Sergey Carp from New York City, Co-founder / CTO
When AI answers a question about products, services or companies, it usually does not rely on its "memory" alone. It searches the web, gets a set of pages, picks the most relevant ones and retells them in its own words, citing the pages it used. This approach is called retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG.
Key takeaway
AI searches the web and cites pages that are accessible, answer directly, have verifiable facts and are confirmed by other websites.
Which pages get cited more often:
- Accessible ones. The website is open to search engine and AI crawlers, loads quickly, and the text is visible without heavy scripts.
- Ones that answer the question directly. A short answer up front, then details, tables and lists.
- Ones with verifiable facts. Prices, timelines, locations, company details and named authors, and those facts match other sources.
- Ones confirmed by others. The company is mentioned on third-party websites: directories, industry media, review platforms.
Each AI platform has its own way of finding pages. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on the Google index, and Microsoft Copilot relies on Bing. ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity use their own crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot) along with search partners. But what makes a good source is similar everywhere, which is why AI search optimization has become predictable enough to plan.
One practical consequence: a company gets into the answer in two stages. First its page has to be found and read, which is the job of classic SEO. Then its passage has to be more useful than a competitor's, which is the job of generative engine optimization (GEO). That is why GEO is built on top of good old SEO, not instead of it.
Answers also vary. The same question asked twice can cite different websites, depending on the wording, the user's location and how fresh the index is. So the goal is not one fixed position, but showing up across as many of your customers' questions as possible. We break the full mechanism down in AI search ranking factors.
AI Search Optimization has been doing SEO since 2002 and turns websites into sources AI chooses. The fee is $290 per month, including the first 10 hours of work, and every additional hour is $45. Book a call: we will show you why AI cites some websites in your industry and not others.
